Coconut Macaroons...

A few days ago, as I was paying for my small two-flavor cup (Chocolate Hazelnut/Almond Joy) at Stogo, I noticed these beautiful, Munchkin-sized mounds of flavored coconut.  The Blackberry Lemon beckoned with its purple hue, and they were only $2! I took one to try the next day.

That next day, I sat backstage waiting for the show to begin and took my first bite of the Blackberry Lemon.  It was fantastic... sweet, tart, moist yet crumbly.  I couldn't believe my taste buds.

I also could not stop thinking of these macaroons and for two days worried I might not get back to Stogo before they are out of my favorite (thus far) flavor.  So I returned one evening to snatch up two more of the same flavor, one for dessert that night and one for breakfast (!) the following morning.

These macaroons are actually called CocoMoons and are made by Conscious Nosh, who are based out of Brooklyn (local!) and San Francisco (the city that owns my heart).  Coconut macaroons have become a common raw/vegan dessert... but these are by far the plumpest and tastiest I've tried!

I look forward to trying their other flavors, as they seem to rotate them often.  I love finding new vegan treats being offered at the neighborhood establishments I visit most.  Conscious Nosh also sells their CocoMoons on etsy, so anyone anywhere can try these delicious creations.

Miso Soup Connoisseur - Caravan of Dreams

Light miso base, chopped red onions, scallions, red and yellow peppers, no tofu and a lot of seaweed.  All those veggies don't overwhelm the lovely broth.  Recommended!

Happy National Margarita Day!

Cold-Crusher Smoothie

I rarely get sick, but when all of the actors in a tiny backstage space are sick, the germs are bound to spread.  I made this smoothie and had it over a few days and felt 100% just in time for my 30th birthday weekend!

Cold-Crusher
Makes 2 servings

  • 1 apple, quartered
  • 1 pear, quartered
  • 1 c. fresh or frozen blueberry
  • 1 c. orange juice
  • 1/2 c. goji berries, soaked in an immune-boosting herbal tea
  • 1 tbsp acai powder
  • 1 tsp spirulina
  • half head of romaine, spinach, or dandelion greens
Allow goji berries to soak for 20 minutes or so.  Add all items to blender, including goji soaking liquid.  Blend away and get well soon!

Pears are very high in Vitamin C, but most of it is in their peel, so leave the skin on and buy organic.  This smoothie contains lots of antioxidants and immune boosters.  Actually I think I'll keep some herbal immunity tea in the fridge to add to all my smoothies the next few weeks.
